What Is Tree Felling?

Tree felling is the process of cutting a tree at or near its base and directing it into a carefully selected fall zone.

Unlike sectional tree removal, where a tree is dismantled progressively in smaller pieces, controlled tree felling generally brings the main tree down in one piece. This can be a safe and efficient option when there is enough open space around the tree.

Professional tree felling requires more than simply cutting through the trunk. The direction of fall must be carefully planned, and the tree’s condition, weight distribution, surrounding hazards and natural lean must all be considered before the first cut is made.

When Is Controlled Tree Felling Suitable?

Controlled felling may be appropriate where the property provides a sufficiently large and unobstructed fall zone.

It is commonly used on:

• Large residential blocks
• Commercial and industrial sites
• Development sites
• Vacant blocks
• Farms and large estates
• Land clearing projects
• Properties with open paddocks or cleared areas

The available space must be assessed in relation to the tree’s full height and canopy spread. Nearby buildings, fences, roads, powerlines, neighbouring properties and other trees can affect whether felling is suitable.

When Is Tree Felling Not Appropriate?

Not every tree can be safely felled in one piece.

A different removal method may be required when a tree is:

• Too close to a house or other building
• Overhanging a roof, pool or neighbouring property
• Positioned beside fences, sheds or retaining walls
• Near roads, footpaths or public areas
• Growing around overhead services
• Located on a steep or restricted site
• Structurally unstable or badly storm damaged
• Surrounded by landscaping that must be protected
• In an area without a suitable fall zone

In these situations, the tree may need to be dismantled progressively using climbers, elevated work platforms, ropes and controlled rigging systems.
