The Environmental Weeds of Queensland: Cadaghi and Slash Pine

In the lush landscapes of Queensland, two tree species stand out for their environmental impact: the Cadaghi (Corymbia torelliana) and the Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii). While both trees may appear innocuous at first glance, their proliferation poses a threat to the native flora and fauna of the region.

The Cadaghi tree is a towering presence with distinct features. Its bark tells a tale of roughness at the base and smooth, greyish-green hues as you move up the trunk. The leaves are broad, relatively large, and often bear a rough texture. One can easily identify a Cadaghi tree by the distinctive black sooty deposits on its leaf blades, a result of sooty mould infestations.

Environmental Impact

Unfortunately, the Cadaghi tree's allure belies its invasive nature. Originally from northern Queensland, it has found its way into south-eastern Queensland, where it has become a serious environmental weed. Native bees, attracted to its resin-coated seeds, inadvertently aid in its spread, affecting eucalypt forests across the region.

In open woodlands, the Cadaghi casts a dense shade, stifling the growth of native understorey plants. This alteration of the natural ecosystem threatens the biodiversity and structure of sub-tropical Australian forests.

Slash Pine (Pinus elliottii)

Another troublesome species in Queensland is the Slash Pine. Recognizable by its grey to rusty brown bark that sheds in flat discs, the Slash Pine is a fast-growing tree with needle-like leaves grouped in twos or threes. Its elongated male cones and large female cones are characteristic features.

Environmental Impact

The Slash Pine, originally introduced for forestry purposes, has escaped cultivation and become an environmental weed. Its rapid growth and ability to form dense stands make it a threat to native vegetation. In Queensland, it competes with local flora, altering habitats and diminishing biodiversity.

Removal and Contact Information

Fortunately, property owners do not require approval to remove these invasive species. If you have Cadaghi or Slash Pine trees on your property, it's advisable to take action to prevent their spread.
